From the start of my career, readers have been asking what other fairy tales I may someday want to tackle, and “Bluebeard” has long been one of my top answers. The tale itself is gory and horrific and strange … so naturally, it’s one of my favorites. I’m thrilled to finally have written this book that’s been tugging at my brain for more than a decade. To that, I want to start by thanking you . Reader, your support—for me and this book, but also fairy tales and ghost stories in general—means the absolute world to me. I am honored that you trusted me enough to pick up this book and spend your time going on an adventure together, and I truly hope you enjoyed the journey as much as I did.
We authors might be solitary beings, but we are not alone in the creation of our books, and I am endlessly grateful to the many people who have helped make The House Saphir a reality, including:
My stalwart agent, Jill Grinberg, and the team at Jill Grinberg Literary Management—Lisa Barelli, Katelyn Detweiler, Sam Farkas, and Denise Page.
My wonderful editor, Liz Szabla, and the team at Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group: Johanna Allen, Robby Brown, Sara Elroubi, Jean Feiwel, Carlee Maurier, Megan McDonald, Katie Quinn, Morgan Rath, Dawn Ryan, Gaby Salpeter, Helen Seachrist, Naheid Shahsamand, Jordin Streeter, Mary Van Akin, Melissa Zar, and Kim Waymer.
My fastidious copyeditor, Ana Deboo, who helped this story sparkle.
My talented illustrator, Andrew Davis, and designer, Rich Deas, for creating such jaw-dropping cover art.
My brilliant critique partner and friend, Tamara Moss, whose input always serves to not only improve the book, but also to make me a better writer.
My assistant and friend, Joanne Levy, who has bettered my life and career in countless ways.
My graphic designer and friend, Taylor Denali, for creating gorgeous book merch, swag, and art for social media, and generally making me look like I know what I’m doing.
My phenomenally talented and supportive writing group—Lauren J.A. Bear, Kendare Blake, Martha Brockenbrough, Cookie Hiponia Everman, Arnée Flores, Shanna Germain, Tara Goedjen, Donna Barba Higuera, Corry L. Lee, Alison Kimble, Kelsea Koops, Nova McBee, Lish McBride, Margaret Owen, Sajni Patel, Rori Shay, Rain Sullivan, J. Ann Thomas, and Brianna Tibbetts. (And probably more will be added to the group after I submit these acknowledgments, so thanks to all my new and future friends, too!)
And of course—Jesse, Delaney, Sloane, and all my family and loved ones. These past few years have been exceptionally hectic (even for me), and it would be impossible to fully express how much your love and support means to me. I couldn’t do it without you.
